Abstract

Seeds lyophilized and not lyophilized of Baullinia variegata L. var. variegata were stored during two years under room and freezer (4ºC) environmental conditions. For storage, the lyophilized seeds were placed in sealed polyethylene bag wrapped in alumnium foil while those not lyophilized were placed ~ paper bag for room storage and in polyethylene bag for freezer storage. The seeds stored for 90 days were submitted to the accelerated ageing test. The moisture content and germination tests were carried out before the storage and after 30, 90 and 730 days of storage. The results showed that (a) the lyophilization was a efficient method for the drying seeds; (b) the lyophilization was indifferent for increasing the seeds storage period; (c) until 90 days of storage, the seed germination was not affected by the storage conditions; (d) the seeds natural aged was not reflected by the accelerated ageing test; (e) the seeds stored in room temperature did not germinate at the end of two years storage; (f) at the end of two years, the seeds stored in freezer conditions had a little, but significative, decrease in their gerrninative capacity.
